VULCS Manual Book

2022 Library Research Speculative Project
VULCS stands for the Vortex Universal Library Credit System and ULS stands for the Universal Library System. These are speculative systems that are placed in the near future that allow people to have access to books and libraries globally. This project helps highlight the importance of the library today in an advancing digital age.
I created a user guide/manual that provides a "How to" to the system. It discusses, how to apply for a UL(B) ID (Universal Library (Biometric) ID), borrow a book, return a book, incentives if the book is lost or damaged through VULCS, and more.

Speculative design is an approach that explores and challenges the boundaries of what could be possible in the future. It goes beyond traditional design practices by envisioning alternative futures and proposing thought-provoking concepts that push the boundaries of technology, society, and culture. Through speculative design, we can reflect on the impact of emerging technologies, social issues, and human experiences, sparking meaningful discussions and inspiring innovative solutions.
This project started out as a group but as we narrowed down our main goal for universal libraries and access, we began to develop our own project.
Getting access to materials in the library can sometimes be difficult. In terms of access, each person can have their own barriers that may prevent them from being able to check out a book. This can be due to not having a library card or because a specific book that someone wants is not available within the library system. Either way, not having access to books (physical or digital) can be frustrating.
How might we improve accessibility for minority groups among public library systems, starting with the Champaign Public Library?
How might we restructure the way public library systems, such as the Champaign Public Library, around the world allow people to borrow physical and digital materials?
This user guide/manual allows me to showcase the need for clear instruction along with visuals and the importance of layout for the user. By imagining a future that still somewhat utilizes the want for a physical manual, gives room to explore the library as an important space for many people and their communities.
